You can build strong bones by drinking milk and eating other calcium-rich food. Weight-bearing exercises also help.

Start early, fill your bones with calcium and make them strong today!

Common foods that contain calcium:

  • Milk and milk products
  • Low-fat yoghurt
  • Low-fat milk
  • Cheese

Others include:

  • High-calcium soya bean milk
  • Kailan (cooked)
  • Canned sardines (with bones)
  • Beancurd, firm (tau kwa)
  • Spinach / Chye sim (cooked)
  • Calcium fortified bread
  • Broccoli (cooked)
  • Papaya

Weight-bearing exercises

Weight-bearing exercises and resistance exercises are activities that make you move against gravity, and they have been recognised as important for building and maintaining bone density.

Examples of weight-bearing exercises are:

  • brisk walking
  • jogging
  • rope skipping
  • dancing
  • playing ball games such as basketball, soccer, netball, etc.

Encourage your school to participate in the ‘Fill Your Bones’ Campaign 2010. Have your picture taken using the props provided at the mobile photo booth in school. Rules and Regulations

  1. The ‘Give Milk a Shot and Win’ Contest 2010 begins on 11 October 2010 and ends on 7 November 2010.
  2. This contest is open to youth aged 13 – 18 years old from participating schools.
  3. There shall be a maximum of 5 students in each photograph.
  4. The first 120 photographs from each participating schools will be printed and a copy will be given to the participant(s).
  5. All rights to the photographs belong to Health Promotion Board (HPB) which may use them for education, publicity or any other purpose in any medium as deemed fit and appropriate.
  6. All photographs shall be uploaded onto Facebook (www.facebook.com/Breathe.sg/) by 15 November 2010 where individuals can tag themselves.
  7. Entries will be judged based on the
    • creativity of the photograph (ie.  creative poses and use of props) and
    • relevance and creativity of the accompanying caption.
  8. Winners shall be decided by judges from the Health Promotion Board and their appointed partners.
  9. The organiser(s) has(have) the right to replace or not award any prize if it is of the opinion that none of the entries meet the judging criteria.
  10. Winners shall be contacted by email and Facebook by 1 December 2010. Prizes must be claimed by the winner and shall not be exchangeable. To collect the prizes, winners shall be required to produce their Student Pass for verification.
  11. The decision of the judges and organisers shall be final and no correspondence shall be entertained.
  12. Prizes not collected within 30 days from the date of notification shall be forfeited.
  13. Winners shall not hold HPB, and its partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, agencies and/or employees liable for any injury, loss or damages which may result from the use of the prizes.
  14. Participants may receive future email communications from HPB.
